I remember the first time I met Greg. Doug Balfour introduced me to him. Greg was already in Cats, and was pretty well known in Toronto Music Theatre. We were all going out to hear a friend's band. I was pretty intimidated meeting this big star in music theatre circles.
Of course, I needn't have been. Greg and I started talking. I was touring with a Theatre on the Move show at the time. Greg and I started talking about Theatre on the Move, about Paul and Jim (who ran the company), and I work (now late) mutual friend Gord, to went from stage managing Theatre on the Move shows to acting to starring as Javert in Les Miserables. Poor dog couldn't get a word in edgewise. Greg was the absolutely loveliest guy that I could imagine.
Over the next few years, I got to know Greg and Irene, who was equally lovely. I was so impressed by their kindness to each other, and their kindness to everyone they met. They were two of the most generous spirits I could ever imagine.
I consider myself really fortunate to have met Greg and gotten to know him a little. He was a really lovely, lovely man and a blessing to all who knew him.
Just as a ps, I remember going out for Japanese food with Greg and Irene one night. They introduced me to the delights of green tea ice cream! I have to thank them for that. It's brilliant.
